Reviews are one of the few things a local business can control that clearly affects how people choose between options on Google. Most owners know they need more, but the usual advice is either vague (“just ask!”) or risky. This guide explains **how to get more Google reviews** steadily, without breaking Google’s rules or consumer protection law.

**Quick answer:** Ask every customer, at the moment they are happiest, with a direct link to your review form. Make it one tap, send one polite reminder, and reply to every review. Never pay for reviews, offer discounts in exchange for them, or only ask customers you expect to leave five stars.

## Why reviews matter so much for local businesses

Google lists review count and rating as part of how prominent a business is in local results ([Google Business Profile Help](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7091?hl=en)). But reviews matter even more after ranking, when a customer is choosing between you and two neighbours. Recent, detailed reviews answer the questions people are too busy to ask.

## What is not allowed

Before the how, the rules. Getting these wrong can get reviews removed, your profile restricted, or worse.

- **No incentives for reviews.** Google’s policies prohibit offering money, discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews.
- **No review gating.** Asking only happy customers, or screening people first and sending only positive ones to Google, is against Google’s rules.
- **No fake or bought reviews.** In the US, the FTC’s rule on consumer reviews and testimonials bans fake reviews and buying reviews, and allows civil penalties for violations ([FTC](https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2024/08/federal-trade-commission-announces-final-rule-banning-fake-reviews-testimonials)). The UK and other countries have similar consumer law.
- **No reviews from staff or family** posing as customers.

## A simple system to get more Google reviews

### 1. Get your direct review link

In your Google Business Profile, use the “Ask for reviews” or “Get more reviews” option to copy a short link that opens the review form directly. Save it somewhere your whole team can find it.

### 2. Ask at the right moment

The best time is right after a clear win: the job is finished and looks great, the client just thanked you, the appointment went well. Asking a week later gets far fewer responses.

### 3. Make it personal and easy

A short, human message works better than a template that sounds automated:

> “Thanks again for having us in today, Maria. If you have a minute, a quick Google review really helps a small business like ours: [link]. No pressure at all.”

Send it by text if you have permission, since people open texts faster than emails.

### 4. Use more than one touchpoint

| Touchpoint | How |
| --- | --- |
| In person | Ask at the end of the job, then send the link |
| Text or email | Same day, with the direct link |
| Invoice or receipt | A short line and a QR code |
| Website | A “Leave us a review” link on your thank-you page |
| Physical | A QR card at the counter or left after a service visit |

### 5. Send one reminder, then stop

One friendly follow-up after two or three days is reasonable. More than that feels pushy.

### 6. Reply to every review

Thank people for positive reviews by name and mention something specific. For negative reviews, respond calmly, acknowledge the problem, and offer to sort it out offline. Future customers read your replies as much as the reviews.

## What to do about unfair or fake negative reviews

If a review breaks Google’s policies, for example it is spam, off-topic or from someone who was never a customer, you can report it from your profile. Google decides whether to remove it. For genuine but harsh reviews, a calm public reply is usually the best response.

## Using reviews on your website

Show real reviews on your website, near the places people decide, such as service pages and the contact page. Link to your Google profile so visitors can see they are genuine. Do not edit review text to make it sound better.

If you get views on Google but few calls, reviews may be only part of the problem. See [why local businesses lose customers after Google finds them](https://sukeshdas.com/local-business-losing-customers-google/).

## How I can help

I help local businesses set up the systems around reviews: a review link on the thank-you page, automated review requests after bookings or jobs, and a website that shows real reviews where they help people decide. If you use a CRM such as GoHighLevel, the requests can go out automatically after each job. See my [GoHighLevel setup](https://sukeshdas.com/services/gohighlevel-expert/) and [automation](https://sukeshdas.com/services/ai-automation/) services, or [ask me about your setup](https://sukeshdas.com/contact-us/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I offer a discount for a Google review?

No. Google’s policies do not allow incentives for reviews, and in some countries it may also break consumer protection law.

### Is it okay to only ask happy customers for reviews?

No. Selectively asking or screening customers before sending them to Google is known as review gating and is against Google’s policies. Ask all customers.

### How do I get my Google review link?

Open your Google Business Profile, choose “Ask for reviews” or “Get more reviews”, and copy the short link it gives you.

### Should I respond to every Google review?

Yes, where you can. It shows future customers you care, and thoughtful replies to negative reviews often matter more than the review itself.

### Can I remove a bad Google review?

You cannot delete reviews yourself. You can report reviews that break Google’s policies, and Google decides whether to remove them.
