Squarespace schema markup is added as JSON-LD inside a <script type="application/ld+json"> tag, pasted into a page’s Page Header Code Injection or site-wide Code Injection → Header. Squarespace already outputs some structured data on its own, so you only add what is missing, such as LocalBusiness details, FAQs, services, author and breadcrumbs. Copy-paste templates for each are below, plus how to test them.
I’m Sukesh Das, a Squarespace Circle Platinum Partner. I have built more than 1,200 websites since 2018, a lot of them for therapists, coaches, advisors and local businesses that depend on search. While researching this guide I reviewed over 7,000 solved questions on the Squarespace Forum. Schema questions there usually stop at “paste this in the header”, without explaining what Squarespace already adds or which types are still worth the effort in 2026.
Squarespace schema markup at a glance
| Schema type | Where to add it | Worth adding? |
|---|---|---|
| LocalBusiness (or a subtype) | Site-wide header or home page header | Yes, for any business with a location or service area |
| FAQPage | Page header of the page with the FAQs | Yes for AI and machine understanding, no Google rich result since May 2026 |
| Person (author) | About page header | Yes, for experts and personal brands |
| Service | Each service page header | Yes, describes what you sell |
| BreadcrumbList | Page header of deeper pages | Helpful on sites with nested pages |
| AggregateRating on your own business | Anywhere | No, Google ignores self-serving reviews for rich results |
What is schema markup and why does it matter?
Squarespace schema markup is a small block of structured data that describes your page in a format machines read easily. Instead of guessing that “Mon to Fri, 9 to 5” are your opening hours, a search engine reads "openingHours": "Mo-Fr 09:00-17:00" and knows for sure.
It uses the shared vocabulary at schema.org, and Google recommends the JSON-LD format, which is the one used in this guide. JSON-LD sits in its own script tag, so it never changes how your page looks.
In 2026 schema matters for two reasons. It can make pages eligible for certain rich results in Google, and it helps AI search tools and assistants understand who you are, what you offer and where. Good Squarespace schema markup does not replace good content, but it removes guesswork. My Squarespace AI SEO and Squarespace GEO checklist guides cover the wider picture.
Does Squarespace add schema markup automatically?
Yes, some. Squarespace generates structured data from the information you fill in, but its help center does not publish a full list of what it outputs, so I will not pretend there is an official one. Here is how to see exactly what Squarespace schema markup your own site has.
- Open any page of your live site in Chrome.
- Right-click and choose View Page Source.
- Press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on Mac) and search for
application/ld+json. - Read each block. The
"@type"line tells you what it describes.
On most 7.1 sites you will typically find markup for the website itself and for your business or organization, built from Settings → Business Information. Blog posts, products and events usually get their own markup too. What changes from site to site is how complete it is, which is why you should check before adding more.
The practical rule: fill in Business Information fully first, including address, phone and hours, because that feeds Squarespace’s own output. Then add custom Squarespace schema markup only for the things Squarespace does not cover, such as a more specific business type, FAQs, services, author details and breadcrumbs.
Before you start
- Code Injection, including Page Header Code Injection, needs a Core, Plus or Advanced plan, or one of the older Business and Commerce plans.
- Code Blocks with JavaScript also need a plan that allows custom code. A JSON-LD script inside a Code Block counts as custom code.
- Custom CSS works on every plan, but CSS cannot add schema, so schema needs one of the two options above.
- Write your schema in a plain text editor, not a word processor. Curly “smart” quotes break JSON instantly.
- Have your real business details ready: legal name, address, phone, hours, URL and logo URL.
How do I add schema markup to Squarespace?
Option 1: Page Header Code Injection (best for most schema)
Use this for Squarespace schema markup that belongs to one page, such as FAQs on your FAQ page or a Service on a service page.
- In the Pages panel, hover over the page and click the gear icon.
- Go to Advanced.
- Paste the full script, including the
<script type="application/ld+json">tags, into Page Header Code Injection. - Save, then test the live URL.
Option 2: site-wide Code Injection header
Use Website → Pages → Custom Code → Code Injection → Header for schema that describes the whole business, such as LocalBusiness or Organization. It loads on every page, so keep it to the business entity and do not put page-specific FAQs here.
Option 3: a Code Block
You can paste Squarespace schema markup into a Code Block on the page. Search engines read it wherever it sits. I prefer page header injection because Code Blocks can be deleted by accident when someone edits the layout, and they can leave a small gap in Fluid Engine sections.
Blog posts
Each blog post has its own Advanced → Post Blog Item Code Injection field in the post settings. That is where post-specific Squarespace schema markup, such as an FAQ at the end of an article, goes. For styling the blog itself, see my Squarespace blog CSS guide.
How do I add LocalBusiness schema to Squarespace?
This is the most valuable Squarespace schema markup for a business with a location or service area. Paste it into the site-wide header and replace every value with your real details:
<!-- LocalBusiness schema for Squarespace by Sukesh Das, sukeshdas.com -->
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "LocalBusiness",
"@id": "https://www.example.com/#business",
"name": "Example Studio",
"url": "https://www.example.com/",
"logo": "https://www.example.com/logo.png",
"image": "https://www.example.com/storefront.jpg",
"telephone": "+1-555-555-0123",
"email": "[email protected]",
"address": {
"@type": "PostalAddress",
"streetAddress": "123 Main Street",
"addressLocality": "Austin",
"addressRegion": "TX",
"postalCode": "78701",
"addressCountry": "US"
},
"geo": {
"@type": "GeoCoordinates",
"latitude": 30.2672,
"longitude": -97.7431
},
"openingHoursSpecification": [
{
"@type": "OpeningHoursSpecification",
"dayOfWeek": [
"Monday",
"Tuesday",
"Wednesday",
"Thursday",
"Friday"
],
"opens": "09:00",
"closes": "17:00"
}
],
"areaServed": "Austin, TX",
"sameAs": [
"https://www.instagram.com/example",
"https://www.linkedin.com/company/example"
]
}
</script>
The @id gives your business a stable identifier, so other schema blocks (like Service or Person) can point to it. sameAs lists your official social profiles, which helps search engines and AI tools connect them to your website.
Which LocalBusiness subtype should I use?
Use the most specific type that is true. A few valid schema.org types that suit common Squarespace clients:
| Business | Schema type |
|---|---|
| Law firm or attorney | LegalService or Attorney |
| Accountant or bookkeeper | AccountingService |
| Financial advisor | FinancialService |
| Clinic or practice | MedicalClinic or MedicalBusiness |
| Doctor | Physician |
| Therapist or counselor | MedicalBusiness, or plain LocalBusiness for non-clinical practices |
| Dentist | Dentist |
Two notes. There is no Psychologist type on schema.org, so do not use it, even though some generators suggest it. And schema.org marks the general ProfessionalService type as deprecated because it was confused with Service, so I avoid it on new sites and pick a more specific type instead.
If you work from home or only visit clients, leave out streetAddress and use areaServed to describe where you work. Never publish an address in schema that you do not show on your site.
How do I add FAQ schema to Squarespace?
Add FAQPage Squarespace schema markup to the page that shows the questions and answers. Every question and answer in the schema must also be visible on that page, word for word or very close.
<!-- FAQPage schema for Squarespace by Sukesh Das, sukeshdas.com -->
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "FAQPage",
"mainEntity": [
{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "Do you offer online sessions?",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "Yes. I offer secure video sessions for clients anywhere in Texas."
}
},
{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "How long is a first consultation?",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "The first consultation lasts 50 minutes and includes a short intake form."
}
}
]
}
</script>
Does FAQ schema still show in Google?
No. Google first limited FAQ rich results to well-known, authoritative government and health websites in 2023. Then, according to the Google Search Central documentation updates, the FAQ rich result stopped appearing in Google Search from May 7, 2026, and Google has removed its documentation for the feature.
So why add it? FAQ markup still states your questions and answers in a clean, structured way. It costs nothing, it is valid schema.org vocabulary, and machines that read structured data, including AI tools, can use it to understand your content. Just do not expect expandable FAQ boxes in Google any more, and do not pay anyone who promises them.
How do I add Person schema for the author or owner?
For coaches, therapists, consultants and authors, the person is often the brand. Person schema on your About page connects your name, job title and profiles. Link it to your business with worksFor:
<!-- Person schema for Squarespace by Sukesh Das, sukeshdas.com -->
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "Person",
"@id": "https://www.example.com/about#person",
"name": "Jane Doe",
"jobTitle": "Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist",
"url": "https://www.example.com/about",
"image": "https://www.example.com/jane.jpg",
"worksFor": {
"@id": "https://www.example.com/#business"
},
"sameAs": [
"https://www.linkedin.com/in/janedoe",
"https://www.psychologytoday.com/profile/example"
],
"knowsAbout": [
"Couples therapy",
"Anxiety",
"Family counseling"
]
}
</script>
In any Squarespace schema markup, only list credentials and profiles you can back up. Schema is a statement about your page, and anything in it should be true and visible.
How do I add Service schema to a Squarespace page?
Add one Service block of Squarespace schema markup to each service page. It tells machines what the service is, who provides it and where:
<!-- Service schema for Squarespace by Sukesh Das, sukeshdas.com -->
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "Service",
"name": "Couples Therapy",
"serviceType": "Couples counseling",
"description": "Weekly 50-minute couples therapy sessions in person in Austin or online across Texas.",
"provider": {
"@id": "https://www.example.com/#business"
},
"areaServed": {
"@type": "State",
"name": "Texas"
},
"url": "https://www.example.com/couples-therapy",
"offers": {
"@type": "Offer",
"price": "180",
"priceCurrency": "USD"
}
}
</script>
The offers part is optional. Leave it out if you do not show prices on the page, because the schema should match what visitors can see.
Can I add review or star rating schema to Squarespace?
You can write it, but it will not get you stars in Google for your own business. Google’s review snippet guidelines say LocalBusiness and Organization review markup is only for sites that collect reviews about other businesses. Marking up testimonials about yourself counts as self-serving reviews and is not eligible.
Product reviews are different. If you sell products and show genuine customer reviews on the product page, review and AggregateRating markup on that product can be eligible. Never invent ratings or copy Google reviews into schema, it breaks Google’s guidelines and can lead to a manual action.
How do I add BreadcrumbList schema to Squarespace?
Breadcrumb Squarespace schema markup describes where a page sits in your site structure. It is most useful on sites with nested content, such as service categories or a large blog. Add it to the deeper page’s header:
<!-- BreadcrumbList schema for Squarespace by Sukesh Das, sukeshdas.com -->
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "BreadcrumbList",
"itemListElement": [
{
"@type": "ListItem",
"position": 1,
"name": "Home",
"item": "https://www.example.com/"
},
{
"@type": "ListItem",
"position": 2,
"name": "Services",
"item": "https://www.example.com/services"
},
{
"@type": "ListItem",
"position": 3,
"name": "Couples Therapy",
"item": "https://www.example.com/couples-therapy"
}
]
}
</script>
Positions start at 1, and the last item is the current page. Keep the names the same as your navigation labels.
How do I test Squarespace schema markup?
Always test Squarespace schema markup on the live URL after saving. Use two free tools, because they check different things:
| Tool | What it checks |
|---|---|
| Google Rich Results Test | Whether the page is eligible for Google rich results, and errors in the types Google supports |
| Schema Markup Validator | Whether all your schema.org markup is valid, including types Google does not show as rich results |
Because Google no longer shows FAQ rich results, the Rich Results Test will not list your FAQPage as a rich result. Use the Schema Markup Validator to confirm it is valid. After publishing, Google Search Console reports on supported types over the following weeks.
What are the most common Squarespace schema markup mistakes?
- Invalid JSON. The most common Squarespace schema markup error: a missing comma, a trailing comma after the last item, or curly quotes from a word processor breaks the whole block. Run it through the validator before saving.
- Duplicate schema. Pasting LocalBusiness in the site-wide header and again on the home page gives two conflicting entities. Add each type once, and check what Squarespace already outputs.
- Content that does not match the page. FAQ answers, prices or hours in the schema that are not on the page. Schema must describe visible content.
- Page-specific schema site-wide. FAQPage in the global header puts the same FAQs on every page, including pages without them.
- Made-up types or properties. Types such as Psychologist that do not exist on schema.org are ignored or flagged.
- Missing script tags. Raw JSON pasted without
<script type="application/ld+json">shows as text or is ignored. - Forgetting to update it. Change your phone number or hours, and the schema needs the same change.
If code you added earlier stopped working after a Squarespace change, my guide on why Squarespace code stops working covers the usual causes.
Is Squarespace schema markup worth it for small businesses?
For most small businesses, Squarespace schema markup is worth it, as long as you keep it focused. Complete Business Information, one accurate LocalBusiness block, Service markup on key pages and Person markup for the expert behind the business cover most of the value. That takes an hour or two.
If you are weighing platforms partly on SEO features like this, my comparison of Squarespace vs WordPress for therapists and coaches covers the trade-offs. On the Squarespace side you get no schema plugin, but JSON-LD in code injection does the same job. You can also see how I handle other no-plugin additions in how to add an age verification popup to Squarespace, and how to keep everything readable on phones in fixing Squarespace mobile issues.
Squarespace schema markup FAQs
Does Squarespace add schema markup automatically?
Yes, some. Squarespace outputs structured data based on your site and Business Information settings, and usually for blog posts, products and events. Its help center does not publish a full list, so check your page source for application/ld+json to see what your site has.
Where do I paste schema markup in Squarespace?
Paste page-specific JSON-LD into the page settings under Advanced, Page Header Code Injection. Paste business-wide schema such as LocalBusiness into Code Injection, Header. Both need a Core, Plus or Advanced plan, or an older Business or Commerce plan.
Can I add schema markup on a Squarespace Personal or Basic plan?
Not with Code Injection, which needs a higher plan. On plans without custom code you rely on the structured data Squarespace generates, so fill in Business Information completely.
Does FAQ schema still work in Google?
Google stopped showing FAQ rich results from May 7, 2026. FAQ schema is still valid schema.org markup and can help machines and AI tools understand your questions and answers, but it no longer creates FAQ boxes in Google.
Which schema type should a therapist use?
There is no Psychologist type on schema.org. Clinical practices can use MedicalBusiness or MedicalClinic, and non-clinical practices can use LocalBusiness. Add Person schema for the therapist and Service schema for each service.
Can I add star ratings to my Squarespace business with schema?
Not for your own business. Google treats review markup about your own LocalBusiness or Organization as self-serving and does not show stars for it. Genuine product reviews on product pages can be eligible.
How do I test my Squarespace schema?
Test the live URL with the Google Rich Results Test for Google-supported types and with the Schema Markup Validator at validator.schema.org for all schema.org types.
Can duplicate schema hurt my Squarespace SEO?
Conflicting duplicates make it harder for search engines to know which details are correct. Add each type once, avoid repeating LocalBusiness on several pages, and check what Squarespace already outputs.
Does schema markup help with AI search?
Structured data states facts about your business in a format machines read easily, which supports AI search tools in understanding your content. It works best alongside clear on-page content that says the same things.
